A massive earthquake has hit the coast of southern Peru.
A tsunami threat has been issued in Peru after a powerful earthquake struck just off the coast of South America.
The 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck about 124km south-west of the town of Puquio, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. Officials in Peru said there is a tsunami alert for areas within a 300km radius of the earthquake.
According to Peru’s government Geophysical Institute, the earthquake was of magnitude 7.3 reduced to 7.1 with its epicentre in Lomas, in the southern region of Arequipa.
