Disaster unfolding as more than 120,000 people have been forced to flee their homes after days of torrential rain in Myanmar
Ten people have been killed and more than 120,000 have been forced to flee their homes after days of heavy monsoon rains flooded villages in central and southern Myanmar, according to government officials.
The Burmese National Disaster Management Committee has urged residents near river banks and low-lying areas to move to higher ground after floods shut down roads and submerged villages, leaving communities stranded.
As of Tuesday, more than 120,000 people across five provinces had been displaced by rising waters, with Magway Region in central Myanmar particularly hard hit, with more than 70,000 affected, said Min Thein, director of Myanmar’s Department of Disaster Management.
Images released by Myanmar’s Ministry of Information show rescue boats evacuating people, while children and families cling to rooftops to escape rising water levels.

Saudi Arabia has reportedly reassured the Palestinian Authority and Arab states that it would oppose any peace plan put forward by US President Donald Trump’s administration that does not accept the Palestinian stance on the status of Jerusalem and the resettlement of millions of descendants of refugees.
“We will not abandon you,” King Salman promised Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during a recent meeting, Reuters reported Sunday.
“We accept what you accept and we reject what you reject,” the Saudi king added, the Palestinian ambassador to Riyadh Basem Al-Agha told the news agency.

BEIRUT, Lebanon — The Syrian government regained control of the frontier with the Israel’s Golan Heights for the first time in seven years on Monday, after Islamic State-linked militants gave up their last pocket of territory in the area.
The breakthrough against the militants, reported by state media and an opposition-linked war monitoring group, capped a six-week-long bloody campaign to retake the southwest corner of the country.
Rebels captured the area along the Golan Heights after a popular uprising broke out against Syrian President Bashar Assad in 2011. An IS-linked outfit known as the Khaled bin Al-Waleed Army later seized the area from the opposition fighters.

Nabil al-Samman, a Syrian expert on international waters, made the case for an upcoming “water war” in an article published Friday by Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat. The article defines the term as being used to
refer in the Mediterranean to “the use of water as a weapon in order to control its sources, or the diversion of water as a commercial commodity controlled by powerful upstream states for political ends.” The piece outlines a decades-long history of difficult relations and devastating conflicts that have set the stage for a potential upcoming crisis between Syria, Iraq and Turkey. “When the sounds of guns and war drums fade in Syria and Iraq, new tensions may arise because of water, especially in their conflict with Turkey, from which the Euphrates and Tigris rivers flow,” the report read.

Typhoon "Jongdari" made landfall near Ise in Mie Prefecture around 01:00 JST on Sunday morning, July 29, 2018 (16:00 UTC, July 28), with maximum sustained winds of 90 km/h (56 mph) and gusts to 126 km/h (78 mph). After an unprecedented two month drought with the hottest temperatures on record, parts of the UK has now witnessed it’s wettest day ever and today is set to be even worse as the Met Office has warned that this will only get worse today, with gale-force winds and heavy rain.
Parts of the UK experienced their "wettest ever day," with Aldergrove in Northern Ireland hit by 98.8mm – which is more than a month’s worth of rainfall.
The UK is braced for more than 36 hours of torrential downpour, according to the Met Office which has issued several weather warnings over rainfall and gale-force winds.
Intense flooding and gale-force winds are expected in places causing travel chaos around the country.
According to The Daily Express, Saturday marked the first day since 23 June that nowhere in the UK had temperatures above 25C.
Yesterday’s highest temperature, 24C, was found in Cavendish in Suffolk and Weybourne in Norfolk.
This points to a dramatic 10-degree drop from Thursday, the hottest day of the year so far.
However, the Met Office is warning the heatwave will be back by midweek.

Iran’s currency hit a record low on Sunday of 100,000 rials to the dollar amid a deepening economic crisis and the imminent return of full US sanctions.
The unofficial rate stood at 102,000 rials by midday, according to Bonbast, one of the most reliable sites for tracking the Iranian currency.
The rate was confirmed by a trader who spoke on condition of anonymity to AFP.
The rial has lost half its value against the dollar in just four months, having broken through the 50,000-mark for the first time in March.
